A trade facilitation centre Deendayal Hastkala Sankul for handicrafts has been inaugurated by the prime minister Narendra Modi, in Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) on September 22. He described the centre as one of the biggest project for Varanasi.
Union Textiles Minister Smriti Zubin Irani was also present at the inauguration ceremony of the Rs. 300 crore-Deendayal Hastkala Sankul. Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik; Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath; and Minister of State, Textiles, Ajay Tamta were among other dignitaries who graced the occasion.
The foundation stone was laid by him on Novemeber 7, 2014 but the setting up of a Trade Facilitation Centre and a Crafts Museum to develop and promote handlooms, handicrafts and silk products of Varanasi was first announced in the Budget 2014-15.
The Centre would serve as a platform for those artisans and weavers to make their skills popular globally and help increase their earnings.
The establishment of this centre would positively affect the demand of handicrafts, and also positively impact the tourism industry of Varanasi, and definitely the economy of the city, according to PM.
