The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has prepared a plan to develop the powerloom town of Bhiwandi, in the neighbouring Thane district of Maharashtra, as a logistics and godown hub.
Around 400 to 500 hectares of land has been earmarked for the proposed logistics and godown hub, Maharashtra chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis said in the State Assembly.
The existing godowns would also be regularised, Fadnavis said adding that those which could not be regularised even after relaxing norms will have to be demolished.
Bhiwandi town is among the few Indian cities that have a large number of powerlooms. The growth of powerlooms in this town was spurred by the decline of Mumbai’s textile mills. The town also has the largest godown present in Asia, and is the “mother godown” for several industries.
