To mark the importance of handloom in economic social life, FICCI and its Ladies Organisation (FLO) is celebrating 2nd National Handloom day at Federation house, New Delhi, on August seven. An exhibition of handlooms, khadi & related products and buyer-seller meetings would be organized on this day.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had inaugurated the 1st National Handloom day in Chennai on the same day last year saying that the world is becoming progressively more aware about the environment and holistic healthcare. There is a need to highlight the eco-friendly aspects of handloom products. He said “khadi and handloom products provide the same warmth that mother’s love provides.”
Handloom industry is the second-largest employment provider for the rural population in India after agriculture. This industry contributes 15 per cent of the total cloth produced in this country. There are 470 handloom clusters spread in all over the country. Indian handloom industry is the largest in the world and it is a low capital intensive industry.
