Emporium for Manipur handloom and handicraft products will be opened in every district of the state soon with an aim to attract more tourists, minister of textiles, commerce and industries Thongam Biswajit said at a function in Uchekon, Laikon Lampak in Manipur.
The function was jointly organised by department of textiles, commerce and industry and directorate of handlooms and textiles in connection with opening of bank accounts for the weavers.
Biswajit said that the spinning mill located at Loitang Khunou will be revived very soon as the textile ministry is going to provide 70 per cent subsidy for reviving the spinning mill as it is the only cotton mill in the entire North East India.
Handloom and handicraft are important because they are main sources of income for many people of Manipur. In order to increase their production as well as their income, the centre will provide rupees four lakh worth solar power looms to the weavers of the state. In order to save time, delivery system of raw materials will be launched very soon in the state, the minister said.
Project manager (handloom), Imphal East, P Meenakumari said that it is necessary for the weavers to open bank account for applying various schemes of the central government.
