Prime minister of India Narendra Modi believes that ‘Khadi for Fashion’ is now the apt slogan for khadi instead of ‘Khadi for Nation’. While distributing traditional wooden charkhas (spinning wheels) to 500 women in Ludhiana, Punjab, Modi said that khadi is a priority and is being marketed well now. He also said that a charkha can be a means for income.
“Khadi is a priority for us, and a charkha at home brings more income. Khadi is marketed well now, adding that once upon a time, the apt slogan was ‘Khadi for Nation’, but now it should be ‘Khadi for Fashion’,” Modi added.
Charkha distribution was carried out at the launch of the National SC/ST hub, and the Zero Defect, Zero Effect (ZED) scheme for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Ludhiana. He also presented national awards to MSMEs at the launch ceremony.
The Prime Minister also said that it is natural to launch a scheme related to MSMEs from Ludhiana as it is an important economic centre. He added that MSME sector is crucial for the economic progress of India and urged MSMEs to match global quality control standards.
