The Odisha government plans to seek Geographical Indication (GI) registration for handicraft and handloom products like Odisha Ikat and Sambalpuri Bandha sari, since they qualify for GI registration. Since these products are associated to a particular geographical area, those are eligible for GI registration, experts feel.
Odisha chief secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi has directed the handlooms, textiles and handicrafts secretary, Chithra Arumugam, to do the needful and thereby protect the interest of weavers and artisans in the state.
