The Indian textile ministry, Smriti Irani had started the Mudra scheme where large state-run banks extend concessional loans to handloom weavers upto Rs. 5 lakhs in all states. Recently announced in the assembly by state minister for handlooms and textiles, OS Manian that Tamil Nadu has ranked first in implementing the Weaver Mudra Scheme during 2016-17 and 2017-18 respectively.
Manian said, “Tamil Nadu has disbursed 18,488 Mudra loans to the tune of Rs. 90.12 crore during 2017-18, higher than the 17,031 loans worth Rs. 82.38 crore disbursed in the previous fiscal.”
The Government of State has also given Rs. 49,045 lakhs for the scheme to allocate free dhotis and sarees, the minister quoted.
Distribution of Rs. 43,644.45 lakhs have been made for providing free electricity to powerloom weavers, while Rs. 484.05 lakh has been allocated for handloom weavers in the 2018-19, he said.
